We believe Green IT is just good business practice. Every element of an IT infrastructure should be designed to be as resource efficient as possible, whether that means using less hardware, consuming less power or a combination.
Cloud computing, for example, enables organisations to reduce their carbon footprint by decreasing their hardware requirements. If you are implementing VDI or desktop as a service, you could extend the life of your existing PCs by using them as a terminal and no longer running the desktop OS locally. Alternatively you could use thin clients which have a significantly smaller power footprint, a longer lifecycle, and are easier to manage as a near stateless device. Both offer significant cost savings over a desktop PC, as well as reducing the organisation’s carbon footprint.
We have a track record of helping companies implement green IT solutions that reduce energy use and carbon emissions. Many of our projects have been recognised by success at the Green IT Awards, where we have been winners for the last four years.
Examples of the green benefits achieved our customers have achieved as a result of infrastructure change projects include:
- London Borough of Hillingdon – private cloud solution saved more than £93,000 on their annual energy bill and reduced their carbon footprint by 35%. Green IT Award winners in 2010 and 2011.
- Intelligent Energy – virtualised infrastructure significantly reduced power consumption and cooling requirements, hardware requirements (4 servers instead of 50-60) and travel. Green IT Award runner-up 2012. IE says the solution “has paid for itself many times over”.
- London Borough of Brent – desktop solution for its new Civic Centre (which aims to be the greenest public building in the UK) has reduced power consumption by more than 80%, cut the council’s carbon footprint and helped to reduce waste through reducing hardware needs. Green IT Award winner 2012
- Team BFK (a joint venture between BAM Nuttall, Ferrovial and Kier Construction Ltd.) which is building part of the Crossrail infrastructure – platform as a service solution to reduce carbon footprint through lower power use and hardware requirements. Winner of the 2013 Green IT award for cloud/virtualisation project of the year.
