Do you have procedures for testing your business continuity plan?
As important as designing a business continuity plan is testing it. Too few businesses do this. Often, the first test is when the system breaks down in reality, exposing aspects of the plan which, had they been adapted and amended through regular testing, would have minimised the systems failure impact on the business.
Testing is an integral part of BCP. It is essential that regular testing is performed.
Business continuity requirements need to be considered whenever changes to the business continuity plan are made and tested on a regular basis. Effective BCP needs regular testing, particularly when you have a volatile core IT infrastructure.
Business continuity should be inextricably linked to as part of the change management process. Your BCP should be tested periodically and re-tested each time significant changes are made.
